The best city to find work if you are an app developer
Over the years applications have had a significant impact on app developers; but more importantly on the users, in fact, I am sure a lot of you can agree with me here when I say apps have become a tool to help carry out day-to-day activities. In one of my recent articles I examined how much revenue an average developer makes depending on the operating system the programmer performs activities on, however today we look at the best cities in the world for app developers to find work.
In 2013 it was announced that Android was the market leader for the three months to December. In this time they were able to secure 68.6% of Europe’s market. In addition, Android has performed well in other markets showing growth across 12 significant markets, which include USA, Latin America, China and Japan (kantarworldpanel, 2014). But for now, we will only focus on the U.S market.

New York also known as “the big apple” recently has had growing demand for Android app developers. By analysing the illustration showed in “figure 1.1” we can see why urban cities in the U.S. like New York have had an increase in demand for Android developers. In 2011 it was estimated that 35.7 million smartphone users in the United States own an Android smartphone, and today that number has almost doubled having reached an astonishing 76 million users in the U.S. Yoh, a company that specializes in providing short- and long-term professionals for the information technology, scientific, clinical, engineering, healthcare, telecommunications and industrial industries; recently published a graph that revealed how many job openings there are in the US. for app developers in each platform, which cities have the most job openings, the average salaries in those areas and the most frequently requested skill sets.

Figure 1.2 shows the 40 days of average length of job postings for the top 5 skill sets in specific areas and shows Android developers are at the top with 1,856 job openings which include cities like New York, New Jersey and Long Island area.
Moving on Dominic Sunnebo, a contributor to kantarworldpanel.com announced: “Apple has lost share in most countries compared with this time last year, but importantly it has held strong shares in key markets including 43.9% in the USA, 29.9% in Great Britain and 19.0% in China” (kantarworldpanel, 2014). Chuck Jones from Forbes magazine confirmed this and said “Apple’s U.S. Smartphone Market Share Holding Steady Against Every Competitor”. In the same article, he includes brief data that has been published by comScore which show Apple as the largest vendor with 41.3% market share followed by Samsung in second place which functions on Android with 27% share of the U.S. market. Being the largest vendor in 50 States there is no doubt there are job openings for app developers that operate on the iOS platform and has been confirmed by another research carried out by Yoh.

The illustration is made up of data collected over an average of 47 days of job postings, and it clearly shows there is a high demand for iOS developers with 8,000-job openings running across the country along with a secure salary between $70,000- $150,0000.
The consumption of mobile smartphones has created new jobs in the app market. Currently, it is estimated that there are 159.9 million smartphone users in the United States, and by 2017 that number should is expected to change to 207.4 million. However, it is not just smartphones that are creating new opportunities out there but also new technologies like wearable are opening new doors for developers.
