Women, technology, reproductive health… These all seemed concepts that were impossible to merge in the male-dominated digital world. But the arrival of <\/span>FemTech<\/b> has proven that it\u2019s not only possible but also profitable.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are currently <\/span>over 200 FemTech startups<\/b> worldwide, many of them founded and run by women.<\/span><\/p>\n

These innovative startups have the potential to evolve into an industry of almost <\/span>\u20ac45 billion by 2025<\/b> according to data published in 2018 by US consultancy firm Frost&Sullivan.<\/span><\/p>\n

    What is FemTech?<\/span><\/h2>\n

    The name was originated in 2016 when <\/span>Clue app<\/span><\/a> founder <\/span>Ida Tin<\/b> coined this term for apps tackling <\/span>female reproductive health<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    FemTech companies have been responsible for <\/span>a real boom in innovative solutions to women\u2019s health problems<\/b> like fertility solutions, reproductive health care, fertile days and menstrual cycle monitoring, prenatal and postnatal care, menstruation healthcare products, wireless breast pumps, and even clothing or gadgets to relieve menopause symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n

    During 2020, <\/span>the importance of directing FemTech beyond reproductive health<\/b> is being increasingly emphasised. Many FemTech companies try to analyse other problems besides those concerned with reproduction that affects women differently than men, or to which they are more prone such as Alzheimer\u2019s, immunodeficiencies, or certain kinds of cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

    This innovative industry means that a new domain has opened for technology and big companies such as <\/span>Fitbit<\/b> and <\/span>Apple<\/b> are beginning to become aware of the importance of women\u2019s well-being and aim at becoming FemTech leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n

    FemTech has not only brought about improvement to women\u2019s health; it goes beyond this concept and is opening the <\/span>tech labour market<\/b> \u2014 which was up till now dominated by men \u2014 to plenty of female entrepreneurs, developers, programmers, and creators. For this reason, FemTech companies and FemTech leaders are increasingly being related to feminist movements.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Top 5 FemTech Startups<\/span><\/h2>\n

    We\u2019ll now analyse some FemTech startups which are representative of the wide scope covered by this flourishing industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

    #1 Cirqle Biomedical<\/span><\/h3>\n

    Based in Copenhagen, this company has created a <\/span>non-hormonal contraceptive technology<\/b> for women: <\/span>OUI<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    It consists of a capsule that dissolves and releases its components after being swallowed. Its goal is to provide an effective and safe hormone-free contraception method. It\u2019s effective straight away from the moment it enters the body and lasts until a day after being ingested.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Contraceptive technology is an alternative to hormonal birth control, which has a long list of possible negative side effects such as mood swings, headaches, or anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Cirqle<\/b> was founded in 2018 with the help of <\/span>Dr Ljudmila Katchanhas <\/b>and has since raised a total of <\/span>\u20ac1.6 million<\/b> that is being invested in preclinical development with a view to launch it commercially in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

    #2 Lattice Medical<\/span><\/h3>\n

    This French startup uses <\/span>bioengineering<\/b> to treat women who have survived breast cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Statistically, <\/span>40%<\/b> of these patients undergo a mastectomy to remove the tumour but only <\/span>14%<\/b> of them get breast reconstruction. <\/span>Lattice Medical<\/span><\/a> has begun developing a <\/span>bioprosthesis<\/b> that enables women who have overcome this cancer to win back their former bodies and lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

    These implants are made from <\/span>3D-printed biomaterials<\/b> that \u2014 when implanted \u2014 enable the breast\u2019s natural reconstruction by triggering the regeneration of the patient\u2019s adipose tissues. The device breaks down completely within the patient\u2019s body without leaving any trace or toxicity once its role has been properly performed.<\/span><\/p>\n

    It\u2019s a safer and more comfortable alternative to the silicon-based breast implants in use today. Lattice Medical has been operative since October 2017 and has already raised <\/span>\u20ac2.3 million<\/b> for research funds.<\/span><\/p>\n
